Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about our throttle bodies, Shaftless technology, dry sump systems, fitment and ordering.
Throttle Bodies & Shaftless Technology
What is Shaftless throttle body technology?
Shaftless is AT Power's patented throttle body design. Conventional throttle bodies run a single spindle (shaft) straight through the middle of every bore to hold the butterflies; that shaft sits directly in the airstream and disrupts airflow. Our Shaftless design removes that obstruction from the bore, giving a cleaner, less restricted path for air into the engine — improving airflow, throttle response and overall performance while keeping precise, reliable throttle control.
What are individual throttle bodies (ITBs)?
Individual throttle bodies give each cylinder its own dedicated throttle butterfly and intake, rather than sharing a single throttle on a common manifold. This sharpens throttle response, improves cylinder-to-cylinder balance and increases airflow potential, which is why ITBs are a popular upgrade for performance and motorsport engines. AT Power designs direct-to-head and manifold applications across a wide range of engines — browse them by manufacturer in the shop.
Do AT Power throttle bodies need a standalone ECU?
Our electronic fuel injection (EFI) throttle bodies are designed to run with a compatible standalone or aftermarket engine management system (ECU). Correct ECU compatibility, professional installation and tuning are required to run them safely — incorrect installation or mapping can damage your engine. If you are unsure whether your setup is compatible, get in touch before ordering.
How do I choose the right throttle body size?
The ideal bore size depends on your engine's capacity, number of cylinders, target power and intended use (road, fast road or full race) — a larger bore favours top-end power, a smaller bore favours response and driveability. The quickest route is to choose your engine from the vehicle-specific categories in the shop, or contact our team with your engine and power goals and we'll recommend the right specification.
What is the difference between cable-pull and drive-by-wire throttle bodies?
Cable-pull (cable-actuated) throttle bodies are opened mechanically by a traditional throttle cable. Drive-by-wire (DBW) throttle bodies are opened by an electronic actuator controlled by the ECU, which enables features such as traction control, cruise control, launch control and precise electronic throttle mapping. AT Power offers both; DBW systems also require a compatible Electronic Throttle Actuator (ETA) and ECU.
Fitment, Installation & Options
Do I need professional installation and tuning?
Yes. AT Power products are high-performance components intended for professional installation, ECU configuration and tuning on a rolling road or engine dyno. Failure to install and map the system correctly can cause engine damage and will void the warranty. We strongly recommend using an experienced engine builder or tuner.
What anodising colours are available?
Silver and black are the standard finishes at no extra cost. A premium anodising range (18 colours including blues, greens, gold, orange, red, violet and copper pink) is available on most products for an additional charge. You choose your finish from the colour swatches on the product page before adding to basket.
Do you supply ram pipes, trumpets, fuel injectors and fittings?
Yes. Alongside the throttle bodies we supply supporting parts such as ram pipes/trumpets in various lengths, fuel rails and fittings, injector mounting hardware and throttle position sensors. Many are selectable as options when you configure a throttle body; others are listed under Throttle Supporting Products.
Are AT Power products road legal?
AT Power components are performance and motorsport parts. Whether a particular installation is road legal depends on your vehicle and the regulations in your country or region, and it is the buyer's responsibility to ensure compliance with local road-use and emissions law. Many customers use our products for track, competition and off-road applications.
Dry Sump Systems & Oil Pumps
What is a dry sump system and do I need one?
A dry sump system stores engine oil in a separate external tank and uses a dedicated pump to scavenge oil from the engine, rather than relying on the standard wet sump pan. It maintains reliable oil pressure under hard cornering, heavy braking and high-g driving where a wet sump can starve the engine of oil — so it is a common upgrade for race and high-performance engines. Explore options in Dry Sump Oil Systems.
What is the difference between your oil pump stages?
Pump "stages" refer to the number of scavenge/pressure sections. More stages provide greater scavenging capacity for larger or higher-revving engines and more demanding applications. We offer multi-stage Cordis gerotor pumps with options such as an integrated pressure relief valve (PRV). If you are unsure which stage suits your build, contact us with your engine details.
Ordering, Delivery & Support
Do you ship internationally?
Yes — we ship worldwide, and many of our international dealers and resellers also stock our products and provide local build support. You can see our dealers on the Partners page.
What are your typical lead times?
With the range of configurable options we offer, most of our throttle bodies are made to order, so the lead time depends on what your order needs:
- 8–10 weeks when we don't hold the parts in stock and they need machining, anodising and assembly from scratch.
- 4–5 weeks when we already have the machined components in stock and they just need anodising and assembly.
- 1–2 weeks (on occasion) for the silver and black anodised parts we are beginning to stock, where only assembly is required.
For the current lead time on a specific product or a custom build, please enquire.
Can I order a bespoke or custom product?
Yes. Many products offer a "Configure Your Own" option with additional configurable choices, and fully bespoke items are shown as "Price on request". For anything custom, tell us your engine, application and requirements and our team will quote you directly — either through our online enquiry form, or by completing our Universal Throttles Enquiry Form (PDF) and sending it back to us.
Do you offer servicing or refurbishment?
Yes. We offer throttle body refurbishment and oil pump testing services. Please quote your product's 5-digit serial number (found on the product sticker) when you enquire so we can identify your exact unit. See the Services page for details.
Where do I find technical drawings and installation guides?
Our Technical Area holds installation manuals, technical drawings and product guides, organised into folders you can browse or search.
